Three leading writers of historical fiction, Rory Clements, Marina Fiorato and Harry Sidebottom, talk about the skills and secrets of writing for the genre with fiction publisher for the publishing house of John Murray, Kate Parkin.
Clements is the author of three bestselling crime novels set in the Elizabethan era featuring intelligencer John Shakespeare, brother of the more famous Will. He won the 2010 Ellis Peters prize for his second novel Revenger. His third novel, Prince, was published in April to great critical acclaim. Fiorato is author of four historical novels, including the bestselling The Glassblower of Murano. Her newest work, The Venetian Contract, is out at the end of August. Harry Sidebottom is a lecturer at Lincoln College, Oxford, who has written many bestsellers and broadcast widely on ancient warfare, classical art and the cultural history of the Roman Empire. His latest work is a novel, The Wolves of the North, set in AD263 as barbarian invasions threaten Rome.
Fiction publisher Kate Parkin joined John Murray, publisher of Clements and Firoato, in 2006 after a career including 11 years at Random House.
