Chris Gooddie gave up his job as a sales director to chase his dream of seeing all 32 species of the elusive and mysterious pitta bird in a single year, something no one else had done. The Jewel Hunter chronicles his 12-month trek across Asia, Africa and Australia to view the birds. This was no holiday as pittas, a jewel-like songbird, are famously elusive, living on the ground in remote areas of snake-infested rainforest.
The Jewel Hunter is more than a tale of a birdwatcher’s obsession. It is a true and humorous tale of one man’s efforts to escape the midlife crisis, about the strange people he meets in faraway places, about trekking in wild jungles and about crawling on the forest floor and coming face to face with venomous snakes.
