About this Event:

Museum curator turned writer Dr Huw Lewis-Jones tells the story of the first successful ascent of Everest, accompanied by clips from George Lowe’s Oscar-nominated documentary, The Conquest of Everest, and photos from Lowe’s unique photographic archive. Lowe was the oldest surviving member of the 1953 British expedition until his death in March this year. He collaborated with Lewis-Jones on The Conquest of Everest, a photography book that celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of the world’s highest mountain. The book features a treasure trove of previously unpublished photographs and rare materials from the historic expedition.

Lewis-Jones is a former curator at the Scott Polar Research Institute and National Maritime Museum. He now writes and lectures widely about adventure and the visual arts. His works include In Search of the South Pole and Mountain Heroes.
