Ticket priceArt historian and biographer James Hamilton brings to life the business of culture in 19th-century Britain in this illustrated talk. He investigates the exchange between culture and business at a time when Britain became a centre for world commerce. It is a world peopled by the likes of Turner, Constable, Landseer, Coleridge, Wordsworth and Dickens, but also by patrons, financiers, collectors, industrialists, lawyers, publishers, dealers, auctioneers, hostesses, brothel-keepers, charlatans and quacks.
Hamilton is a former Alistair Horne Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford, and former university curator at the University of Birmingham. He has curated a number of exhibitions in galleries at home and abroad and his biography of Turner was shortlisted for the James Tait Black Memorial Award.
