Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures Desmond Shawe-Taylor and author of a new book on royal portraits Jennifer Scott discuss with Compton Verney museum and gallery director Dr Steven Parissien how the representation of monarchs has changed over the centuries. Scott’s The Royal Portrait: Image and Impact focuses on work in the Royal Collection overseen by her and Shawe-Taylor. Together they will look at the importance of portraiture in the image-making of kings and queens, how styles have changed over the centuries, and the impact of photography and global media in the modern age.
Shawe-Taylor was appointed Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures in 2005. He is responsible for the care and maintenance of the royal collection of paintings owned by the Queen in an official capacity. Scott is curator of paintings at the Royal Collection. Parissien is director of Compton Verney museum and gallery in Warwickshire. He has written extensively on architectural and cultural history.
