Writer Peter York talks about the biography he has written of his great friend, the photographer and film director Jim Lee. Lee was born to parents who were MI5 operatives. He emigrated to Australia when 17 and, after his parents rescued him from fighting in Vietnam on the grounds of national security, he returned to the UK to concentrate on photography. He photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and became much in demand as a fashion photographer, collaborating with many leading designers. His work is now on permanent display at the Victoria and Albert Museum and shown in galleries worldwide. Somerset House celebrated Lee’s 50 years behind the camera this year with a display of his stunning images. The title, Arrested, refers to Lee famously surviving three post-cardiac ‘technical deaths’ and many other shocks to his system.
Lee chose York to write his biography as the two have been close friends for 45 years. York is author of the Sloane Ranger Handbook and was style editor of Harpers & Queen for ten years. He is also a passionate advocate of the coffee table book and says literary festivals should do more to promote them.
The price for this event includes coffee/tea and cakes.
