Singer Elkie Brooks is the bestselling female album artist in the UK of the last 30 years, according to the Guinness Book of Records, and will provide a fitting grand finale to this year’s festival as she performs and talks about her new autobiography. She rose to fame in the late 70s and 80s with hits such as Pearl’s a Singer, Lilac Wine, Fool If You Think It’s Over and No More the Fool. Brooks, famed for her distinctive husky voice, is still performing live today and her 20th studio album Powerless was released in 2010.
This summer, Brooks released her autobiography, Finding My Voice. Here she talks to writer and broadcaster David Freeman about a career that began at 15 and that has spanned many musical genres, involving collaborations with some of the greatest musicians of her generation. It is also a story of the difficult road to stardom and of some of the hardships that Brooks met along the way and the grit and determination she needed to overcome the hurdles in her way.
Brooks is bringing along her band and will entertain the audience with a few numbers.
