Acclaimed historian and broadcaster John Julius Norwich condenses the history of England into a geographic tour of 100 places in this year’s English Heritage lecture . Norwich conveys the social, economic, cultural, domestic and religious history of the land and the seminal political events through visits to 100 key sites. It makes for a great read and a fascinating tour of the country.
The tour goes from Stonehenge to the modern-day Gherkin. Along the way, Viscount Norwich visits castles, cottages and the Bridgwater Canal. The result is a thought-provoking insight into the national heritage and a discussion about the most important events in English history.
Norwich has served on the executive committee of the National Trust. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Geographical Society and the Society of Antiquaries. He has written and presented around 30 historical documentaries for television and his publications include The Normans in Sicily, The Architecture of Southern England, and A History of Venice.
The inaugural English Heritage lecture was given last year by HRH The Duke of Gloucester. Norwich will be introduced by Mark Pemberton, director of national collections for English Heritage.
